Electrical Engineering
Head of Department: Professor B.J. Downing
Departmental Profile
The Department of Electrical Engineering has 25 permanent
academic staff, 143 MSc
.
students and 48 PhD students.
The research activities and projects are largely industrially
based. The main funding sources are Eskom, Telkom,
Siemens, De Beers, Mintek, Water Research Commission,
Anglo Platinum, Department of Trade and Industry, South
African National Defence Force, SunSpace, IQS and the
NRF.
The Department has seen a growth in the number of
undergraduate students over the past 10 years, which is
expected to result in higher postgraduate numbers. There
are six large research groups in the Department, which
attract 80% of the postgraduate students. These are:
Broadband, Wireless, Communication, and Networks
Image Processing and Vision Systems
