Division of Emergency
Medicine
HeadofDivision: AssociateProfessorLAWallis
Divisional Profile
Emergency Medicine was officially recognised as a medical
specialty in South Africa in 2004. Since its inception, the
Division of Emergency Medicine has been a joint-division
at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Stellenbosch
University (SU). The Head of the Division is joint-staff (70%
Provincial Government of the Western Cape, 15% UCT, and
15% SU). Additionally, many of the faculty and staff share
joint-affiliation with the Provincial Government of the Western
Cape (PGWC). The Division utilises various academic and
satellite hospitals for the purposes of teaching and research;
these include: Groote Schuur, Red Cross War Memorial
Children’s, Victoria, GF Jooste, Paarl, and New Somerset
Hospital. The types of patients seen and emergencies
treated vary among hospitals, allowing our MMed students
to become fully competent Emergency Medicine specialists.
The Division places an emphasis on research publications
by faculty and students at all levels of training. In 2011,
the Division produced 20 publications in peer-reviewed
journals and contributed to more than a dozen book
chapters. The foci of the Division’s research has been in
the following areas: African emergency care development,
emergency ultrasound in Africa, pre-hospital care and
disaster medicine, and emergency care systems.
The Division has 1 Professor, 2 Senior Lecturers, 3
Lecturers, and 1 Research Coordinator between SU
and UCT. There are 9 honorary lecturers at SU and an
additional 10 honorary lecturers at UCT.

Division of Neurosurgery
Head of Division: Professor Graham Fieggen
Divisional Profile
The Division achieved some notable milestones in a year
which saw ad hominem promotion for Professor Tony
Figaji, appointment as a Visiting Professor at the University
of the Witwatersrand for Associate Professor Allan Taylor
and the appointment of the first two Honorary Professors
in Neurosurgery in Peter Siesjo (Lund) and Matthew Wood
(Oxford). Furthermore, consultants organised and hosted
two major international congresses, Emeritus Professor
Kay de Villiers received the prestigious UCT Book Award
for for
Healers, Helpers and Hospitals
and we were able
to include a 3 month research rotation in the registrar
program.
The DoHET-funded Chief Registrar post was awarded to Dr
Marco Kogels after a competitive process and he fulfilled
the role very effectively. This enabled us to restructure the
training program to allow a research rotation and Drs Nte
Mjoli, Johan Malan, David Roytowski and Edwin Mogere
were all able to complete their MMed projects, with Dr
Mjoli becoming the first neurosurgical registrar to pass
