School of Dance
Director: G. M. Samuel
School Profile
Academic enquiry (analysis, documentation and
publication) and creative scholarship (choreography,
direction and performance) inform and constitute a
significant and balanced part of the diverse outputs of
our School. The participation of staff and students in a
variety of dance projects at under- and postgraduate
levels acknowledges the inherent intellectual play of
postmodern - and posthuman - art practice, as referenced
in a democratic, multicultural, [South] African society.
Particular awareness of the role of arts and culture in the
collective post-revolution national psyche - e.g. socio-
political matters around integration - drives many of our
community-focused collaborations.
This year, our launch of the first ever South African
international dance journal devoted to “creat[ing] a space
for established as well as emerging dance academic
voices in South Africa, Africa and the international
community” (SADJ editorial policy statement) is notable
for its historical significance. The biennial publication is
named the South African Dance Journal.
Other usual highlights of the year include performances,
installations, lecture demonstrations, publications,
symposia and seminars as well as engagement
(collaborative productions and work exchanges) with the
following organizations:
Artscape, Black Noise, CAFDA Youth Dance Company,
Cape Academy of the Performing Arts, Cape Celtic Dance
Academy, Cape Junior Ballet, Cape Town City Ballet, Cape
Town International Ballet Competition, Cape Town Jewish
Seniors, Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa, Congress
on Research into Dance (CORD), National Creative Arts,
Creative Cape Town, Dance For All, Dance For All Youth
